Black Mass is an upcoming crime drama film directed by Scott Cooper and written by Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth. The film is based on the 2001 book Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and the Irish Mob by Dick Lehr and Gerard O'Neill. The film stars Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, and Peter Sarsgaard. The film follows the story of James "Whitey" Bulger (Depp), a ruthless Irish mobster who became an informant for the FBI in the 1970s. The film is set to be released in the United States on September 18, 2015.
