Thanks to the State Department, Mary's new "best friend" is a gorgeous, feisty South American woman, Francesca Garcia. This Latin spitfire is a major revolutionary with whom the U.S. government has struck a deal: they'll hide her in the states while they help agitate her countrymen toward rebelling against their dictator, El Presidente. To stir the pot even more, the CIA is quietly spreading the word that Francesca, who is beloved by the working-class citizens, has been captured by El Presidente's men and is being tortured.
Once in Albuquerque, Francesca refuses to live in the seriously sweet-and extremely secure-mansion that the spooks have placed her in. The next day, she moves to a house in a shady part of town where she can be amongst her people. Unfortunately for Mary, Francesca's "people" are drug-dealing gang members who look like they're ready to stir up trouble. Mary's instincts are dead-onin fact, scarily so. After one of the "boys" comes across the street to see Francesca and isn't taking Mary's "no" for an answer, Mary calls Bobby D. to get a cruiser to drive by. But the situation quickly spirals out of control and Mary is shot in the abdomen and knocked unconscious.
Mary, who has stopped breathing in the ambulance, is rushed to the hospital. Marshall crumples into tears, angry at the guy who shot Mary and at himself for leaving his partner in an unsafe situation. Jinx, Brandi and Raphael gather at the hospital to wait for Mary to become stable enough to have surgery. Marshall and Stan work with the police to track down the shooter. Even though Francesca was a witness, she admits to Marshall that she is reluctant to give her statement because she thinks Mary brought the shooting on herself by calling the cops.
It's going to be a very long night for Mary and her loved ones.
