In 1988, standup comedian Willie Ripp's star was on the rise, having just landed a spot on Johnny Carson. While he's celebrating with his girlfriend, Gwen Jones, Willie witnesses Billy Cooper, the owner of the comedy club where he performs, shoot and kill one of his associates in the backroom. Billy is almost second in line until Gwen smashes a bottle over the head of Cooper's partner who had a gun trained on the back of Willie's head. The two manage to escape.
The couple enters the program, becoming then Inspector Stan McQueen's very first witnesses. Unfortunately, Willie's hostility and resentment about his ruined career isn't making things easy for Gwen or Stan. As Willie breaks every WITSEC rule in the book and takes out his anger on Gwen, Stan is suddenly faced with some tough decisions that could destroy his future as a U.S. Marshal.
Years later, when the remains of a man and a women, believed to be Willie and Gwen, are discovered buried at a local construction site, all evidence points to Stan-especially since Bobby D. finds Stan's twenty-year-old USMS badge and ID in the hole. For some reason, Stan's not talking. So Mary, Marshall and Eleanor must try to piece together the story, along with Stan's old boss, to clear Stan's name before he gets nailed for the murder of his former witnesses.
After Brandi attends the Governor's Ball with Peter, she avoids his phone calls until Mary forces her to speak to the poor guy. Brandi agrees to have dinner with Peter, but then proceeds to behave rudely and drink two bottles of wine. If she's trying to drive Peter away, she's doing a pretty good job.
