Melinda discovers an intruder in the basement of her shop, but before she can find out much about him he runs out through the tunnels. She then has another encounter with Dr. Byrd (ep. 417), who tells her that he led the intruder, Ben, to her because he and Sam share the same condition. He then explains that Ben, much like Sam, had not been able to reconcile his past life with his new life and that it was slowly driving him insane. He tells Melinda that if she can help Ben resolve his issues, she will be able to help Sam with his. It turns out Dr. Byrd had seen this pattern a number of times, and Melinda and Eli eventually deduce that Dr. Byrd had been experimenting on recently dead souls, convincing them to step in to newly dead bodies so he could study them and discover how to live again without the side affect of going mad. Melinda and Eli work with an increasingly frustrated Ben to try and help him understand his situation, but the pressure ends up being too much for him and in a fit of rage accidentally puts Melinda in grave danger. However, Dr. Byrd ends up realizing the error of his way and alerts Eli and Sam about the danger Melinda is in. Sam comes to her rescue and in the process all of Jim's memories come rushing back to him, and finally Jim and Melinda are together again.
