In Wisconsin, Sarah attends a house party with underage smoking and drinking. When Rick asks her to go for a drive, she accepts. Meanwhile, Gates and Julia return to his apartment after a date to rip each others clothes off. Afterwards, Julia offers Gates a hit off a joint, but he declines. When she starts putting her clothes on to leave, he is put off, but she explains that she doesn't sleep over this early in the relationship. Disheveled and running through the woods, Sarah calls Gates to come get her right now.
Moretti has a video chat with his son Brian, who's been up all night studying for a midterm, and seems more than a little unglued. He flames out when Moretti asks if he's seen the therapist. After a few days off, Abby enters the staff room to overhear Brian tell his father that he hopes a patient stabs him with an AIDS needle. Moretti tries to talk to Abby about the other night, but she cuts him off.
Gates and Julia find Sarah hiding out at a construction yard, having refused to call police until they arrived. Sarah tells the cops that she had a sip from Rick's flask and when he started touching her, she clubbed him on the head and ran. Back at the ER, Pratt asks Abby if she's okay, and she admits that it's been hard without Luka, but he's due back tomorrow.
Abby meets an ambulance containing 13-year-old Marcus, who has fallen from a ladder, and has chest pain. Marcus' paraplegic father Ronny shows up, and demands to know the worst case scenario, so Abby takes him outside. Marcus has a collapsed lung that needs to be intubated, along with a fractured femur and broken hip. She claims that a surgeon should be able to realign the leg, but Ronny has his doubts.
Harold's gearing up for his homecoming dance date, hoping it will be a night of firsts, thanks to Morris' tutelage. Neela oversees Harold intubating Marcus, and it's clear that Abby's cranky and not on her game. When Ronny figures out that it's Harold's first intubation, he asks why Abby's not doing it, but she has spotted Luka in the hallway and runs to him for an emotional reunion.
Luka was able to get an earlier connection and come home a day early, but didn't bother to tell Abby so she could get the day off. Moretti awkwardly walks in on their embrace and introduces himself, then leaves to see a patient. Luka promises Abby a surprise when she gets home, and excuses himself. In the staff room, Abby watches Luka with the other doctors and then throws up in the sink.
Gates and Julia bring Sarah back to her grandparents, Hank and Becky's, on their remote farm. When Gates and Hank start arguing, Becky sends Hank outside, and asks Julia to help her peel some apples. Moretti asks Abby to talk, but she claims they don't have to, just as Ronny wheels up to accuse her of neglecting Marcus. Marcus' chest still hurts, but Abby explains that it's normal when intubated. Ronny asks Abby if he should ask for another doctor, since she seems so distracted. Marcus is all he has, and he needs Abby to fix him.
Moretti leaves Abby with his work, while calling Brian. Morris has brought in several suits for Harold to try on for his date, but is interrupted by cheese rolling Brit Lionel, who clutches a wheel of cheese and complains of ankle pain. Wearing a white dinner jacket and ready to leave for his date, Harold checks on Marcus, whose chest is puffing up in crisis. Ronny runs off to get the others, who arrive to see Harold slicing into Marcus' chest to relieve the pressure. Pressure is restored and everyone is relieved, but Harold's rental jacket is covered in blood.
acking hastily, Moretti calls Pratt into the break room. He doesn't ordinarily let personal obligations interfere with work, but Brian attacked his professor during his midterm, and he has to leave immediately. Pratt has been wanting more responsibility, so here's his chance to be in charge. Harold watches over Marcus in surgery. When it seems like he's over the hump, the other doctors tell him to leave for his date.
Becky tells Julia and Gates that Sarah has been acting out, becoming more and more like her mother Meg. She and Hank can't go through it again, they're too old. They made a mistake insisting that Sarah live with them. Harold dresses in a fancy tux with ruffled shirt and stops by surgery to show Neela. Suddenly blood sprays out of Marcus' chest - a broken bone has injured an artery. Harold sits down to wait with Ronny, promising Neela will save Marcus, despite his doubts.
Sarah packs her bags and apologizes to Becky, then climbs in the car to return to Chicago with Gates. A boisterous gang of cheese rollers infiltrate the hospital, gunning for Lionel, whom they claim cheated. Morris dispels the situation, seizing the cheese, which he will keep until they watch the video to confirm the winner. Outside in the rain, Abby sees Moretti leaving. She calls after him, telling him she hopes everything works out.
Neela informs Harold and Ronny that they were able to repair Marcus' artery and leg. Ronny sends Harold off on his date, and tells Neela that Harold's a good kid, even if he's a little weird. Morris and the cheese rollers watch the playback video, and Morris decides it's a tie, they should cut the cheese in half. Gareth refuses to cut the cheese, so Morris declares him the winner, per the wisdom of Solomon. Sadly, Frank has already pilfered a slice of cheese.
Abby tells Ronny that she wasn't attentive enough, and he was right to be angry with her. Ronny admits that he has an anger problem; the accident that took his legs killed his wife, and he has been taking his anger out on Marcus, which is unfair. Abby suggests that he try to change, and try not to make the same mistakes, but Ronny thinks there are some things you can't fix. You can't unring a bell.Luka greets Abby at home with his big surprise - his brother Niko. Abby is overwhelmed, but gracious. Luka offers her a drink, and she declines, leaving them to surreptitiously pour vodka into her soda can. She goes to check on Joe, and spills her drink, getting on the floor to wipe it up. Luka pops in to tell her that Niko is going to bed, so they can be alone. When he leaves, Abby sobs.
