After retiring from baseball and faking his death, Kenny Powers is now a family man. He crashed his own funeral, married his longtime sweetheart, April, and is raising two children, Toby and Shayna, in his suburban home. Working at Millennial Rent-A-Car, he chafes at the hands-on management style of his boss, and any reminders of his former celebrity.
Finishing his autobiographical screenplay, Kenny writes, "He didn't win baseball, but he did win life." But inside, he's struggling with his new role as April's supporting partner – and he thinks his new friends are lame.
While dropping off a car at a television studio, Kenny runs into his old teammate Guy Young. Guy hosts a sports TV discussion show called "Sports Sesh" and invites Kenny to attend his AIDS charity event and its after-party. With the drinks flowing, Guy's co-hosts brag about their wealth and ask Kenny what he's got. Because "a modestly priced home," and "a family that loves the f*ck out of me" don't get the response he's after, Kenny tells them about the pool he plans on getting for the backyard.
Kenny wakes up a new man, drag racing on the way to work. He punches his boss in the face before quitting his job. When he's denied the bank loan he needs for the pool, Kenny loads up on his secret stash of drugs and begins digging up the backyard himself.
