Cougar Town Episode 1.09 Here Comes My Girl

Jules pretends that she wants her first post-divorce Thanksgiving to be a small one so that when she buckles and has a big one she'll be known as the hero who saved Thanksgiving. Sounds like a plan!

The guest list for turkey day includes all the usual suspects: Ellie, Andy, Bobby and Laurie. Grayson fishes for an invitation which Jules gladly throws his way. But when he says he'll "probably" swing by, Jules rescinds her offer. Now, he can only come over if he begs. Grayson says he'll never do that. Jules thinks he will. We do, too. Sure enough, he does.

Travis invites his girlfriend, Kylie, over for dinner as well. He tries to convince everyone in attendance to act like normal human beings. That advice doesn't quite take. When Travis arrives with his lady, the entire crew greets her with a musically-delivered "Hi, Kylie." Remarkably, Kylie survives this first wave of embarrassment.

Travis and his mom have a buddy-buddy thing going on, so it's not surprising that he confides to her that Kylie might be the one for his first time. You do know we mean sex, right? Anyway, Jules downshifts from buddy to mom for a few quick tips on emotional readiness and proper protection. In the past, Jules used a rolling pin to show her son how to put on a condom. She's a great mom and, we're assuming, a pretty good baker. Back in buddy mode, Travis tells his mom that tomorrow night is the big night. You do know we mean sex again, right?

The men step out for their annual "Let's Pretend We're Not Old" basketball game. Imagine that volleyball scene in Top Gun where Mav, Goose, Ice and Slider serve and spike in slow-motion as sweat drips from their taut torsos. Sadly, the only thing that scene has in common with the hoops game Bobby, Andy and Grayson play against a trio of neighborhood kids is the fact that the song "Playing with the Boys" is used as background music. The guys do win the game, though it's probably because a little girl on the other team sprained her ankle.

When they get back, Bobby finds out Andy betrayed his confidence by blabbing about his high cholesterol. Ellie tells him to get over it and proceeds to lecture him on his lifestyle. When Grayson comes in, Ellie has a few choice words for him about the 20-something bimbos he dates. This leaves both men feeling a little self-conscious. They wonder if there's truly anyone out there for them so they won't end up alone. When they see Jules walk up the stairs, both men both seem to think there is.

Jules is freaked about the fact that Travis might have sex. She fills up a condom with water to demonstrate just how easily it can break. Unfortunately, this particular prophylactic seems to be made of Kevlar as opposed to latex. It just won't bust. When Kylie wonders why she's being made to watch her boyfriend's mother's impromptu Sex Ed show, Jules explains that she knows that tomorrow night is the big night. Too bad Kylie didn't. She's storms out of the room. Travis is ticked and Jules is crushed.

Jules plops down on the couch between a visibly uncomfortable Bobby and Grayson, who both seem to be struggling to keep their feelings for her in check. They excuse themselves to go shoot hoops. The game gets intense and painful. Afterwards, Bobby and Grayson decide not to talk about this thing they're not talking about. But Andy has picked up on their Jules vibe and Ellie knows her hubby is hiding something. She vows that she'll get him to crack. It just won't be today.

ules has a heart-to-heart chat with Kylie and convinces her to stay for her son's sake. Travis knows his mom made things right. When Jules struggles to lift the turkey out of the oven, Travis comes in to give her a hand. No words are spoken as they work in perfect harmony to prepare the perfect Thanksgiving feast.

At the dinner table, Jules makes everyone hold hands as she talks about all that she's thankful for, which is basically all the people in her life. In other words, Jules is thankful for her family. By the look on everyone's face, we can see that they are just as thankful for her. Happy Thanksgiving, Jules!
