Dr. Manning (Torrey DeVitto), back from maternity leave, treats a teen with a long history of medical issues. After a series of tests are unable to determine the true nature of the girl's illness, Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt) and Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) secretly tape the interaction between the father and the daughter in the hopes of learning more about the mystery behind her ailments. Though Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) is shocked by their covert action - and insists that the tape be destroyed - it's determined that the teen's illness is psychological in nature, due in part to the father's overbearing care. After a heated confrontation between Med and the teen's father, the girl is placed in protective care. The father is devastated - but confides to Dr. Charles that he's willing to reexamine his ways in light of the fact that he may have inadvertently been causing his daughter's issues all along.

Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) is initially happy to see an old Navy shipmate of his come to Med for a routine problem... but is saddened when tests determine that his old friend has colon cancer. Going above and beyond his normal duties, Dr. Choi visits the VA hospital that previously treated his old friend to learn why his care wasn't more thorough. After an emergency procedure at Med, Dr. Choi makes good on his promise to get his friend to a Naval reunion - a reunion Dr. Choi also attends.

Saudi Prince Faisal (guest star Lymen Chehade) arrives at the hospital for a planned surgical procedure, but only from Dr. David Downey (guest star Gregg Henry), the hot-shot surgeon who takes a shine to the work of Dr. Rhodes (Colin Donnell). Meanwhile, a budding romance between Sarah (Rachel DiPillo) and hospital lab tech Joey (guest star Peter Mark Kendall) looks hopeful, but April (Yaya DaCosta) might think otherwise.
