MC SHA-ROCK, born in Wilmington, North Carolina, has been instrumental in shaping the blueprint for female rappers since the late 1970s. Her career began in 1976 as a B-girl in the South Bronx, eventually becoming the first woman to record with a Hip-Hop group. As the “+1” in Funky 4 + 1, she helped break ground for Hip-Hop’s national exposure.

A landmark moment came on February 14, 1981, when Funky 4 + 1 performed “That’s The Joint” on Saturday Night Live, hosted by Debbie Harry of Blondie. This made them the first Hip-Hop act to appear on national television, introducing millions to a then-emerging sound. MC SHA-ROCK not only appeared but set the standard for female MCs in terms of lyrical skill, microphone technique, and stage presence.

Despite her foundational role in Hip-Hop, it took decades for MC SHA-ROCK to receive formal recognition, a lag attributed to longstanding industry biases and the marginalization of women’s contributions in the genre. Her induction into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame corrects this oversight and celebrates her enduring legacy.

The 2026 inductees also include notable figures such as George Clinton, Sugar Bear of Experience Unlimited, the Chapel Hill rock group Arrogance, Sugar Hill Records founder Barry Poss, and jazz composer Billy Strayhorn. The Hall of Fame requires inductees to have at least ten years of national prominence and strong ties to North Carolina, criteria which MC SHA-ROCK fulfills.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for October 15 at the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville, North Carolina. MC SHA-ROCK will be honored alongside these prominent artists, cementing her place in the state’s rich musical heritage and Hip-Hop history.
