AceShowbiz - Taeyang returns with his first full-length studio album in nearly a decade. Titled Quintessence, the album arrives following a performance with his group Big Bang at Coachella, starting off the group’s 20th anniversary year strong.
His previous release, the 2023 EP Down to Earth, reflected on his roots and career origins, marking his comeback after a six-year hiatus which included fulfilling his mandatory military service. Now, with Quintessence, released three years later, Taeyang delves deeper into his artistic evolution, embarking on a fresh chapter in his career.
Despite two decades in the industry, Taeyang continues to push his creative boundaries. Known for collaborating with in-house producers and trusted longtime partners who helped craft his biggest hits, he has now expanded his network for this album. Quintessence features fresh collaborations with notable U.S.-based producers such as the Stereotypes—known for their work with Justin Bieber, Cardi B, and Bruno Mars—and j.Que, who has worked with Usher and Beyoncé. On the Korean side, he teamed up with producers Paul Blanco and BRLLNT to bring new flavors to the record.
In an exclusive conversation with Rolling Stone, Taeyang shared insights into the meaning behind Quintessence and the meticulous creative process that unfolded over the past year. This interview took place amid a busy period between his Coachella appearances and a special event at the Grammy Museum called “Global Spin Live,” where fans were treated to an exclusive preview of select tracks, including the debut performance of the album’s lead single, “Live Fast Die Slow.”
When asked about the inspiration behind the album’s title, Taeyang explained that the concept came from a challenge posed by his A&R team exactly a year prior. They asked him to decide on an album title within a week, which was unusual for him as he typically establishes the title, theme, and concept before beginning the creative process. Reflecting on his recent thoughts and memories, words like “essence,” “true nature,” and “fundamentals” resonated with him. His research led him to the word “quintessence,” a term not commonly used but one that perfectly embodied the spirit of the project by the time it was completed.
The album’s creative journey was a mix of familiar and new partnerships. While Taeyang has a history of working with producers such as Teddy, Kush, and Tablo, this time he was encouraged to step outside his comfort zone and collaborate with fresh talent. He began working closely with Paul Blanco, who helped shape the album’s sonic palette. This process extended into a collaborative song camp involving the Stereotypes, j.Que, Tone Stith, and Chaz Jackson, accelerating the album’s progress.
Taeyang admitted that working with new collaborators was initially difficult. Having been active for many years, he acknowledged the challenge of balancing innovation with maintaining his signature style. Longtime collaborators understand his artistic palette, making it easier to create music that feels authentic. Venturing into new creative partnerships meant finding ways to preserve his identity while exploring fresh sounds. Over time, he gained valuable experience learning how to guide the process and achieve the sound he envisioned without sacrificing his original essence.
Despite the challenges, Taeyang embraced the necessity of being deeply involved in every stage of the album’s production. Unlike previous projects where his trusted team provided robust support that allowed him to focus mainly on his performance, this time he took a hands-on approach from start to finish. He laughed while admitting that every detail required his attention, which was both demanding and educational. This level of involvement empowered him to articulate the nuances and textures he wanted to bring out in the music.
Reflecting on what he hopes listeners will take away from Quintessence, Taeyang highlighted the album’s title as a representation of his core artistic identity. The word “quintessence” encapsulates the album’s exploration of his fundamental nature and the essence of his music. Through this project, he aims to offer fans a glimpse into his true self, combining deep personal reflection with innovative sounds that continue to evolve his artistry.
As Taeyang and Big Bang celebrate two decades in the music industry, Quintessence marks a significant milestone in his solo career. It reflects both a reverence for his roots and a daring step into new creative landscapes, reaffirming his position as a dynamic and evolving artist in the global music scene.
