AceShowbiz - Drake has ended a three-year hiatus from solo studio albums with an unprecedented release of three full-length records dropped simultaneously: Iceman, Habibti, and Maid of Honour. Together, these albums deliver a massive 43 new tracks, totaling approximately two and a half hours of fresh music from the prolific rapper.
The announcement came during the fourth episode of Drake's Iceman livestream last night. After debuting several music videos from the lead album, Iceman, he revealed three hard drives on screen with the caption, "I made this so that I could make this." Notably, the cover of Iceman features a single hand adorned with a sparkling glove, a clear nod to Michael Jackson. The Habibti cover portrays a woman wearing a hijab with only her eyes visible behind masking tape, while Maid of Honour combines a photo of Drake's mother with an image of him smiling alongside his son, Adonis.
The initial track from Iceman, titled "Make Them Cry," directly addresses the aftermath of Drake's 2024 rap feud with Kendrick Lamar, who gained the upper hand with his hit "Not Like Us." On the track, Drake raps, "With Dot back in 2024 was a big piece / So it’s like this shit is me but it isn’t me," highlighting the complex impact of that rivalry. He continues, "Y’all keep on asking me what it did to me, that’s what it did to me / When I dig deep, they say, ‘Dig deeper / Tell us how it felt to meet the Grim Reaper / This album better have some big features.’"
True to the demand for star-studded collaborations, Iceman features appearances by Future, Molly Santana, and 21 Savage. The other two albums include a wide array of artists such as Qendresa, Sexyy Red, Loe Shimmy, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Stunna Sandy, Central Cee, Popcaan, and Iconic Savvy.
Releasing three albums simultaneously is especially notable given Drake's ongoing legal disputes with Universal Music Group, the parent company of both his and Kendrick Lamar's labels. These albums came out under OVO Sound, which operates through Republic Records, a UMG subsidiary. Some have speculated that this prolific output might be a strategic move by Drake to fulfill or possibly escape his current contract.
This theory gains weight from the lyrics in "Make Them Cry," where Drake raps, "I'm better off independent, they should let him leave, yeah / 'Cause I just wanna be free." On another track, "Janice STFU," he adds, "Swear my label gotta free me, baby." These lines suggest that Drake may be preparing to transition to an independent status in the near future.
With the simultaneous release of Iceman, Habibti, and Maid of Honour, Drake provides fans with an expansive new body of work that reflects his ongoing evolution as an artist amid significant industry challenges.
