On Sunday, April 3, Kahan shared the news via an Instagram Story, writing, “Number one album in the country, ’bout to buy the Wi-Fi package on this flight to celebrate.” The LP debuted atop the Billboard 200 dated May 9, marking a significant breakthrough for the artist known for his introspective pop-folk tunes centered around themes of growing up and anxiety.

The Great Divide not only earned the top spot but also registered the largest week for a rock album by units since the Billboard 200 began measuring album units in late 2014. The album amassed 389,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week ending April 30, according to data from Luminate. This impressive performance also ranked as the third-biggest week of 2026 across all albums and represented the biggest week of Kahan’s career to date.

True to his down-to-earth nature, Kahan joked about his frugal celebration on the flight, adding, “(messaging only, horrific rip off for browsing privileges),” alongside a photo of himself on the plane wearing a hood over a baseball cap. His Instagram Story also included a screenshot of the Billboard headline announcing his No. 1 achievement, captioned simply “Oops.”

Ryan Langlois, the general manager of Kahan’s management company, highlighted the singer’s record-setting week by comparing his success to baseball legend Barry Bonds, stating that Kahan is in “Barry Bonds mode setting ’in the modern era’ records.” The Billboard story noted that The Great Divide also achieved the largest streaming week of the year for any album and recorded the biggest vinyl sales week for a rock album since Luminate began electronic sales tracking in 1991.

Showing his playful side, Kahan responded to Langlois’ comment with a tongue-in-cheek remark about his participation in the 2025 celebrity all-star game, saying he would have “given myself more playing time.” He was part of Team Bonds in that game, which featured a star-studded lineup including Kai Cenat, Mickey Guyton, Baron Davis, Rome Flynn, and Alisha Gray.

In addition to his U.S. success, Kahan also debuted at No. 1 on the Official U.K. albums chart with The Great Divide, marking his second chart-topping album in the United Kingdom. The Great Divide is Kahan’s fifth album to chart on the Billboard 200 and his second to reach the top 10. Before this, his 2024 album Stick Season peaked at No. 2. Following the success of The Great Divide, Stick Season made a return to the top 10, climbing from No. 11 to No. 10 in its 179th week on the chart.
