AceShowbiz - Claire Danes is set to headline a new Netflix series titled Lovesick, created by acclaimed showrunner Sarah Treem. The project, which Netflix secured through a competitive bidding process, received a straight-to-series order, underscoring the streamer’s confidence in the show’s potential.
Lovesick is an adaptation of the Israeli drama The Best Worst Thing and is characterized as a “sweeping, modern romantic epic.” The narrative centers around Annika, portrayed by Danes, a distinguished breast cancer surgeon who faces her own cancer diagnosis. Her life becomes deeply intertwined with that of her new patient, Nate, a rising politician.
The series will explore a broad array of themes including love, sex, illness, death, family dynamics, children, health, medicine, and the essence of life, all set against the backdrop of Annika’s breast cancer treatment journey. Danes will also serve as an executive producer on the series, marking a significant creative role beyond her starring duties.
In a statement, Sarah Treem expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Danes on this project, calling Annika a character that represents a blend of their “wildest dreams.” She highlighted the opportunity to tell a story that touches on profound aspects of existence such as life, death, courage, science, and faith, particularly resonant in today’s uncertain times. Treem also conveyed gratitude toward Netflix for the substantial commitment to the series.
The creative team behind Lovesick includes Treem as writer and executive producer alongside Danes, Avi Nir, and Keren Shahar of Keshet Studios. The production is a collaboration between Universal Television and Keshet Studios.
It is worth noting that Netflix’s catalog already includes a Korean drama titled Lovesick, and a Mexican series with the same name is anticipated to debut later this year. Additionally, a British comedy called Lovesick previously streamed on Netflix, highlighting the title’s international appeal across diverse genres.
Beyond Lovesick, Danes has recently appeared in Netflix’s The Beast in Me, as well as in series such as Fleishman Is in Trouble, Full Circle, and Apple TV’s The Essex Serpent. She is represented by WME, Signpost Management, and Ziffren Brittenham.
Sarah Treem is also developing the FX drama Cry Wolf, which stars Olivia Colman and Brie Larson. Before creating the acclaimed series The Affair with Hagai Levi, she contributed as a writer and producer on shows like In Treatment and House of Cards. Her representation includes CAA and Johnson Shapiro.
