AceShowbiz - John Rambo is gearing up to explore a new chapter in the legendary action franchise created by Sylvester Stallone. The upcoming film serves as a prequel to the original 1982 classic First Blood, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the iconic character’s early days as a Green Beret during the Vietnam War.
The original Rambo character was introduced by Stallone in First Blood, directed by Ted Kotcheff. The film revolved around a troubled war veteran clashing with a small-town sheriff and the National Guard, a premise that launched a franchise spanning several decades. Stallone starred in multiple sequels throughout the 1980s and reprised his role in two later films released in 2008 and 2019, cementing Rambo as one of his most enduring and popular roles outside of Rocky.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Adam Fogelson, chairman of Lionsgate, expressed his enthusiasm for the new project. He described the daily footage from the film as "electric," which is a rare compliment in his extensive career. According to Fogelson, the movie manages to feel "entirely fresh" while remaining "entirely respectful of what was created previously."
"The footage Jalmari has shot is extraordinary; it's the best version of what I thought might be possible," Fogelson remarked, praising director Jalmari Helander for his work. "At this point in my career, it's kind of rare for dailies to blow you away. You can be really happy, or you can say, 'Oh no.' It's rare for it to be electric. These dailies are electric."
He added that although the film is a prequel, it provides a perspective on Rambo that feels both new and nostalgic. "You're going to understand the character that you eventually meet in the subsequent films in a way that feels both entirely respectful of what was created previously and entirely original at the same time," Fogelson explained.
The new film stars Noah Centineo as the young John Rambo, a casting choice that carries the weight of following in Stallone’s footsteps. The supporting cast includes notable actors such as David Harbour, Jason Tobin, and Jefferson White. This casting aims to breathe new life into the franchise by portraying a younger version of the iconic character during his military service in Vietnam.
Rambo is widely regarded as one of Stallone’s most memorable roles, with the original First Blood film achieving significant box office success. It grossed over $125 million against a modest estimated budget of approximately $15 million, an impressive return for its time without adjusting for inflation.
While Fogelson did not specifically comment on Centineo’s performance, he highlighted the director’s pedigree. Jalmari Helander is known for his work on the Sisu duology, which also belongs to the one-person action army genre, blending intense action with occasional camp and strong character moments. Both Sisu films have been critically acclaimed, boasting over 90% Certified Fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.
This background positions Helander well to handle the Rambo prequel’s tone and style. If he can replicate the success and craftsmanship of his prior work, audiences can expect an exhilarating and faithful addition to the franchise.
As anticipation builds, Lionsgate has also launched a newsletter offering deeper insights into the production, casting, and creative team behind the new John Rambo. Subscribers will receive detailed analysis of the film’s connection to the franchise legacy, box office expectations, and critical reception once the film is released.
Overall, the new John Rambo film aims to deliver a balanced experience that honors the original series while introducing a fresh narrative angle. With strong support from Lionsgate executives and a director skilled in the action genre’s nuances, this prequel is shaping up to be a respectful yet innovative entry into an enduring series.
