AceShowbiz - Virgin River star Marco Grazzini is optimistic about the next chapter in his career following his exit from the Netflix series. After portraying Mike Valenzuela since season 2, Grazzini confirmed he will not return for the upcoming season 8.
In an interview with Vogue Philippines published on March 10, the 45-year-old actor reflected on his 20-plus years in the entertainment industry. "I'm so grateful for every opportunity, heartbreak and interaction that I've had," he shared. Grazzini expressed a renewed passion for his craft and a desire to explore new roles and genres, especially sci-fi and comedy. He also revealed he is currently co-writing scripts with a writing partner, eager for fresh creative challenges.
Grazzini described his energy about his career as if it is "just getting started," signaling enthusiasm for future projects beyond Virgin River. This optimistic outlook comes as he prepares to wrap up his character's journey on the show.
The confirmation of his departure came from Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, who spoke to Deadline on March 12. Smith noted that while no wide-scale cast shakeups are planned, the series must evolve by phasing out some characters as their story arcs conclude and introducing new faces to maintain the show's momentum and longevity.
Virgin River, adapted from Robyn Carr's bestselling book series, has been a staple on Netflix since its 2019 debut. Besides Grazzini, the show features prominent actors like Alexandra Breckenridge, Martin Henderson, Colin Lawrence, Annette O'Toole, Tim Matheson, and Benjamin Hollingsworth. The series follows the lives and dramas of a small Northern California town’s residents, including Mel and Jack.
Although Mike Valenzuela will not be present in season 8, fans will see his storyline conclude during the newly released season 7. Grazzini teased to Vogue that season 7 is fast-paced and emotionally charged for his character, who faces complex personal challenges. Balancing his relationship with Brie, played by Zibby Allen, against past betrayals from season 6, Mike navigates difficult truths that make this season the most enjoyable for Grazzini to film.
Reflecting on his connection to the role, Grazzini said Mike feels like an ingrained part of him. After multiple seasons, the actor explained that playing the same character often feels like being yourself in front of the camera. This familiarity sometimes leads to questioning whether more should be done creatively, but he acknowledges the risk of disrupting a successful formula.
Virgin River season 7 is currently streaming on Netflix, allowing audiences to experience the unfolding drama and see the resolution of Mike Valenzuela’s narrative. As the series continues to evolve, the departure of Grazzini marks a significant change in the cast lineup that reflects the show's ongoing development.
With his departure from Virgin River confirmed, Marco Grazzini looks ahead with excitement for new ventures in acting and writing. His commitment to exploring diverse genres and characters suggests a dynamic future in the entertainment industry as he seeks roles that challenge and inspire him.
