AceShowbiz - Universal Pictures has announced a shift in its upcoming release schedule involving two major franchise films. The highly anticipated Miami Vice '85 will now premiere on May 19, 2028, moving from its original August 6, 2027 date.
In an interesting swap, the next installment of the The Mummy franchise will be released earlier than planned, moving up from May 19, 2028, to October 15, 2027. Alongside these changes, Universal will debut an untitled Universal event film on August 6, 2027, and an untitled Blumhouse event film on October 8, 2027.
The Miami Vice '85 remake is directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, and stars Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. The film is produced by Dylan Clark and his production company, known for The Batman and The Penguin, with Kosinski also serving as a producer.
The screenplay is penned by Academy Award nominee Dan Gilroy, based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich, who also executive produced the original series alongside Michael Mann. An earlier draft was written by Eric Warren Singer. Universal’s Sara Scott and Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the production development of the project.
Meanwhile, the upcoming The Mummy film is helmed by Radio Silence directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The cast includes Academy Award winners Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser. The screenplay, written by David Coggeshall, remains under wraps as plot details are being kept confidential.
The production team includes franchise veteran Sean Daniel, along with William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein of Project X Entertainment as producers. Executive producers include Brendan Fraser, Jason F. Brown, and Denis Stewart. Jay Polidoro and Jacqueline Garell will oversee production development for Universal.
These strategic date changes reflect Universal’s approach to positioning its event films for maximum impact in the competitive release calendar. Fans can look forward to both Miami Vice '85 and the new The Mummy film arriving in theaters in late 2027 and mid-2028 respectively.
