AceShowbiz - Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is set to continue the story for fans as Sony officially confirms the return of key characters from the acclaimed Spider-Verse trilogy. Following the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and revolutionized animation style, the franchise has steadily expanded its universe with bold storytelling and unique visuals.
The sequel, initially planned for release just one year after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023, faced significant setbacks due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and inherent production delays related to its sophisticated animation process. Now, three years later, the highly anticipated third installment is firmly scheduled for a 2027 release, with Sony reaffirming their commitment during their CinemaCon 2026 presentation.
During this exclusive event, Sony revealed the first official footage from Beyond the Spider-Verse, offering attendees a glimpse into the film’s direct continuation of Across the Spider-Verse. The early scenes depict Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) confronting his Earth-42 counterpart while racing against time to save his father’s life within a pressing two-day countdown. The footage also showcases Miguel O'Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac) actively pursuing Miles, alongside Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) who is tracking Miles across multiple dimensions.
Aside from these central characters, the preview features beloved fan favorites such as Spider-Ham (voiced by John Mulaney), seen holding Peter B. Parker’s infant daughter Mayday, and Spider-Noir (voiced by Nicolas Cage), stealthily navigating the shadows. Intriguingly, the footage also teases the possible return of the Kingpin (voiced by Liev Schreiber), a major antagonist from the original film, hinting at his reintegration into Miles’ storyline.
In an effort to reintroduce audiences to the Spider-Verse universe ahead of the film’s release, a live-action spin-off series titled Spider-Noir will debut on MGM+ on May 25 and Prime Video on May 27. This series, starring Nicolas Cage reprising his animated role, will be presented in both black-and-white and color formats. Its upcoming launch is designed to demonstrate the franchise’s versatility across different media formats, reinforcing the anticipation for Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Moreover, Sony is broadening the Spider-Verse’s scope with more spinoff projects in development. One such venture is an animated film centered on Spider-Punk, a character brought to life by Daniel Kaluuya’s voice performance and introduced in Across the Spider-Verse. Additionally, a separate project focusing on Gwen Stacy is reportedly underway, expanding the franchise’s character-driven narratives.
This strategic expansion comes after Sony’s previous attempts to build a Spider-Man-connected franchise with standalone films like Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter faltered at the box office. Leveraging the Spider-Verse brand to launch new stories and formats appears to be the studio’s most promising path forward.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is officially set to premiere in theaters on June 18, 2027. Fans can look forward to seeing the return of cherished characters such as Spider-Ham, Spider-Noir, and potentially the Kingpin, all woven into a narrative that promises to resolve the cliffhanger and expand the multiverse saga.
