Explore Anne Hathaway's sci-fi journey from Interstellar to her delayed new film, The End of Oak Street, and the production hurdles behind it.

AceShowbiz - Anne Hathaway has built a diverse filmography ranging from romantic comedies to intense dramas, with notable forays into science fiction. Some of her standout sci-fi roles include Dr. Amelia Brand in Christopher Nolan's celebrated space epic Interstellar and Gloria in the underrated sci-fi dark comedy Colossal, where her character’s actions manifest a kaiju in Seoul, South Korea.
Her latest project, the science fiction movie The End of Oak Street, has experienced multiple delays, which have recently been explained in detail. The Hollywood Reporter provided insight into the production challenges faced by J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot, which is currently undergoing a downsizing phase.
In 2024, Hannah Minghella, then head of film at Bad Robot, departed for Netflix during post-production on The End of Oak Street. Crucially, she was never replaced, leaving a leadership gap during a critical phase of the film’s completion. This organizational shift contributed significantly to the delays.
Another factor was the need for additional photography requiring Anne Hathaway and other cast members. However, Hathaway was unavailable due to commitments filming Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Consequently, post-production on The End of Oak Street stalled for approximately six months, unable to progress without the necessary footage.
Originally, The End of Oak Street was slated for a theatrical release on May 16, 2025. That date was first postponed to March 13, 2026, and then delayed further to August 14, 2026. Alongside Hathaway, the cast includes Ewan McGregor as her husband, with Christian Convery and Maisy Stella portraying their children. The film’s first trailer reveals a mysterious storyline wherein the family’s street is suddenly transported to an unknown location and pursued by a dinosaur.
Despite these setbacks, the August release date could prove beneficial. It positions The End of Oak Street as a late summer blockbuster, arriving after major 2026 summer releases such as Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, Supergirl, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. These films are all scheduled for June or July, allowing The End of Oak Street to capitalize on less crowded box office competition as the first major release in August.
The End of Oak Street marks the first collaborative film between Bad Robot and Warner Bros. since their initial deal in 2019, which was renewed in 2024. The film is directed, written, and produced by David Robert Mitchell, known for his work on the horror movie It Follows and the Andrew Garfield-led Under the Silver Lake. The musical score is composed by Michael Giacchino, whose prolific credits include multiple Bad Robot projects such as Lost, Alias, Fringe, the Star Trek films, and Super 8.
Following The End of Oak Street, another Bad Robot and Warner Bros. collaboration titled The Great Beyond is scheduled for release on November 13, 2026. This film is notable as J.J. Abrams’ first directorial effort since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 and features a star-studded cast including Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Samuel L. Jackson, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, and Merritt Wever.
While the multiple delays have tested patience, the upcoming release of The End of Oak Street promises to deliver an intriguing sci-fi thriller with a compelling cast and strong creative team behind it. Fans of Hathaway and science fiction will have the opportunity to experience this unique film when it debuts on August 14, 2026.
