AceShowbiz - The legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon is preparing to embark on a major world tour starting in Prague, which will keep him performing until mid-July. Just before leaving for the Czech Republic, he made a special appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert where he performed the rarely heard track "Something So Right" from his 1973 album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. This marked the first time in 33 years that he played the song live, the last occasion being during his 1993 Concert of a Lifetime residency at the Paramount Theater in New York City.
During the interview segment, Paul Simon reflected on his early days as a folk musician in England during the 1960s, before he rose to fame as part of the duo Simon and Garfunkel. He described how the English and Celtic musical traditions deeply influenced his sound. "That culture, the English/Celtic... I love that music, fell in love with that music," Simon explained. He noted that while he could hear similar influences in American acts like the Everly Brothers, being in England allowed him to connect directly with the music’s roots.
Simon recounted his return to the United States in 1965 when the song "The Sounds of Silence" began climbing the charts, propelled by a folk-rock version produced by Columbia’s Tom Wilson. This remix happened on the same day Wilson worked on Bob Dylan’s iconic "Like a Rolling Stone." Simon recalled hearing from Art Garfunkel that their single had just entered the Cashbox singles chart. A few weeks later, while performing in Copenhagen, Simon nervously checked the latest issue of Cashbox.
"I said, 'I just can't bear to look at it,'" he said, describing his anticipation. He scanned the chart positions from 100 down to 59, and when he finally saw their song at No. 59, he knew his life was about to change. "I'll never forget this, 'My life is irrevocably changed,'" Simon said.
This candid appearance on The Late Show not only gave fans a rare live rendition of a beloved deep cut, but also offered insight into the formative experiences that shaped one of America's most influential songwriters. Paul Simon’s upcoming tour promises to be a celebration of his extensive catalog, blending timeless classics with hidden gems like "Something So Right."
