AceShowbiz - David E. Kelley is teaming up with director Matt Reeves to develop a new television series based on the classic 1980s novel Bonfire of the VanitiesBonfire of the Vanities for Apple TV. The project is currently in development with Warner Bros. TV serving as the studio.
Kelley, known for hit shows like Big Little Lies and Presumed Innocent on Apple TV, will adapt Tom Wolfe’s bestselling 1987 novel, which critiques the excesses of 1980s Wall Street as well as New York’s media and political scenes. Reeves, whose directing credits include The Batman and War for the Planet of the Apes, is set to direct the series and will executive produce alongside Kelley, Sarah Geismer of 6th and Idaho Productions, and Matthew Tinker of David E. Kelley Productions.
Bonfire of the Vanities centers on a bond trader accused of a hit-and-run, a tabloid reporter covering the incident, and the assistant district attorney prosecuting the case. The novel was highly influential upon its release and previously adapted into a 1990 feature film directed by Brian De Palma, which starred Tom Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith but failed to find critical or commercial success.
This adaptation will mark Kelley’s second project based on Tom Wolfe’s work, following his Netflix limited series A Man in Full starring Jeff Daniels, which is set to premiere in 2024. If greenlit, Bonfire of the Vanities would be Kelley’s third series for Apple TV, joining Presumed Innocent and the upcoming Margo's Got Money Troubles, scheduled for release on April 15.
Kelley and his production company are represented by CAA, Gendler Kelly, and Narrative PR, while Reeves is represented by CAA, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Jackoway Austen. The collaboration between these two prominent figures in television and film is highly anticipated as they bring this iconic novel back to the screen in a new serialized format.
