AceShowbiz - Colin Jost is set to headline a new drama series on Peacock centered on the extraordinary true story of Larry Lavin, an Ivy League-educated dentist who became a cocaine drug kingpin.
The upcoming Universal Television production will follow Jost as he portrays Lavin, whose life was chronicled in the first season of the Audacy podcast "Wolves Among Us." The podcast dives into the shocking transformation of this suburban dentist who built a vast drug empire.
Larry Lavin was sentenced in 1986 to 22 years in prison on drug charges, along with an additional 20 years for tax evasion. Lavin is also involved behind the scenes as an executive producer on the series.
While the show is categorized as a drama, it is expected to incorporate comedic elements, reflecting the backgrounds of both Jost and Alex Barnow, the series’ showrunner, who also created "The Goldbergs."
This untitled project is currently in development and will not interfere with Jost’s long-standing role on "Saturday Night Live," where he serves as co-head writer and "Weekend Update" co-anchor alongside Michael Che.
Barnow will write and oversee the series as showrunner and executive producer, collaborating with Jost and Jeff Grosvenor of No Notes Productions under their Universal Television overall deal. Additional executive producers include Rachel Kaplan of Absecon Entertainment, Lavin himself, Matt Davis, and Steve Seidel.
Prior to this project, Barnow worked as a consulting producer on Starz’s "Power: Origins" and held an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television where he served as showrunner and executive producer for "The Goldbergs." He also created and executive produced the ABC comedy "Mr. Sunshine" starring Matthew Perry.
The series marks a notable shift for Jost, who is primarily known for comedy. This will be his primetime television acting debut, although he has appeared in comedic films such as "Staten Island Summer," "How To Be Single," "Tom & Jerry," and the forthcoming "The Breadwinner." He also hosts "Pop Culture Jeopardy!," which is moving from Prime Video to Netflix.
Jost is represented by CAA and Levine Barnes, while Barnow is represented by UTA, Amplified Entertainment, and HJTH.
