AceShowbiz - Yorgos Lanthimos, the acclaimed filmmaker known for his surreal and inventive storytelling, is expanding his artistic vision beyond cinema with a new photobook titled VISCIN. Released in collaboration with MACK Books, this latest project features images captured spontaneously on the set of his 2025 film, Bugonia.
Although the photographs were taken between film takes, the collection stands apart from the movie’s narrative. Lanthimos experiments with unusual compositions, haunting portraits, and evocative landscapes to craft an independent visual story exploring themes of mystery, illusion, mortality, and renewal.
The physical design of VISCIN reflects Lanthimos’s innovative approach. The book unfolds in an accordion or leporello format, mimicking the unspooling of a film reel. As the pages are extended, the imagery transitions deliberately from stark black-and-white photos into vibrant color, guiding the viewer through an immersive experience of foreboding and rebirth.
This photobook release coincides with a major exhibition titled Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs, currently running at Onassis Stegi in Athens. Curated by Michael Mack and commissioned by Onassis Stegi, the show assembles 182 still photographs taken by Lanthimos over the past five years.
The exhibition features selections from his earlier MACK publications, including Dear God, the Parthenon Is Still Broken—created alongside 2023’s Poor Things—and i shall sing these songs beautifully from 2024’s Kinds of Kindness. Additionally, it presents never-before-seen images from the new VISCIN series.
The Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs exhibition will be on view at Onassis Stegi from March 7, 2026, through May 17, 2026. The photobook VISCIN, published by MACK, is also available in conjunction with the show, offering a tangible extension of Lanthimos’s expanding visual universe.
