AceShowbiz - The upcoming Highlander reboot promises a fresh take on the franchise, introducing significant changes to a beloved original character that first appeared in the 1986 film. Although the initial Highlander movie did not achieve immediate success, grossing only $12.9 million and receiving mixed reviews, it eventually cultivated a devoted fanbase. The franchise expanded with sequels such as The Quickening, The Sorcerer, Endgame, and The Search for Vengeance, along with a popular television adaptation. Now, a new film is being shot in Scotland, starring Henry Cavill in the lead role, taking over from Christopher Lambert.
Siobhan Cullen has been cast as Brenda Wyatt, a character originally portrayed by Roxanne Hart. In an interview with Deadline, Cullen explained that while she draws inspiration from the original portrayal, her version of Brenda will be "totally different" due to the reboot setting the character at a "different time in her life." According to Cullen, Brenda is depicted as "getting into trouble" just before meeting Connor MacLeod and becoming involved in the world of immortals. Brenda’s perspective serves as "the eyes of the audience," as she is introduced to this new supernatural reality alongside viewers.
Cullen elaborated, "We find her at a different time in her life. We find her getting into trouble, and when she meets Connor on a pivotal night, as a mortal, she gets swept up in the world of immortals. Because she is mortal in this immortal work, she's kind of the eyes of the audience because she is being introduced into this whole new world, which totally upends her whole understanding of humanity and time and what's possible."
In the original Highlander film, Connor MacLeod, played by Lambert, learns he is immortal and embarks on a quest to defeat his rivals. In the reboot, Brenda becomes suspicious of Connor and is determined to uncover the truth about him. Cullen assured fans that this new iteration of Highlander "is definitely one for the fans," adding that some of the fight scenes in the film "are just insane," hinting at intense action sequences.
This project marks a departure for Cullen, who has previously worked on dramatic and thriller projects such as The Inside, Jimi: All Is by My Side, The Limehouse Golem, and Bodkin, the latter earning her a Gotham Award nomination. For the Highlander reboot, she is collaborating with acclaimed action filmmaker Chad Stahelski, known for directing the John Wick series, and cinematographer Dan Laustsen. Cullen praised Stahelski’s direction, saying he is "so fluent in the language of action," and described the experience as having "this whole other script that's happening that is parallel to our dialogue."
She also highlighted the depth of the screenplay, written by Kerry Williamson and Michael Finch, noting its "plenty of subtext and attention to detail with the characters" as "incredible." This level of complexity makes her a "keen student" on set, eager to absorb everything involved in bringing the story to life.
The cast of the Highlander reboot is star-studded, featuring Henry Cavill as Connor MacLeod alongside Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Marisa Abela, Jeremy Irons, Djimon Hounsou, Drew McIntyre, Jeon Jong-seo, Nassim Lyes, and Kevin McKidd, who recently departed from Grey’s Anatomy. This ensemble suggests a film rich with diverse characters and strong performances.
Despite its rocky start, the original Highlander has seen a resurgence in appreciation over the years. It currently holds a 69% critic score and a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting its cult status among fans of action and fantasy genres. The renewed interest in Highlander paves the way for this reboot to capture both longtime followers and new audiences.
Amazon MGM Studios has yet to announce an official release date for the Highlander reboot, but anticipation continues to build as production progresses. With a fresh creative team, a talented cast, and the promise of intense action sequences, this reboot aims to revitalize the franchise while honoring its legacy.
