AceShowbiz - The creator behind Ted Lasso has launched a new adult comedy series, Rooster. Starring Steve Carell and Phil Dunster, the HBO original show gained traction after its debut, becoming one of the platform’s most streamed titles on its first day.
Rooster premiered on Sunday, March 8, 2026, and by March 10, data from FlixPatrol revealed that the series had climbed to Number 3 worldwide on HBO Max. The show secured the Number 1 spot in 10 countries, including Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, and North Macedonia.
The storyline centers on Carell as Greg Russo, a writer navigating a complicated relationship with his daughter Katie, portrayed by Charly Clive. Dunster plays Archie, Katie’s ex-husband, who has grown distant after leaving her for a graduate student.
The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler as Dylan Shepard, Lauren Tsai as Sunny—Archie’s new girlfriend—and John C. McGinley as Walter Mann, the president of Ludlow College, where much of the series’ action unfolds.
Given Carell’s established reputation, it’s no surprise Rooster found a ready audience. Meanwhile, Dunster continues to build his profile as a compelling lead.
The series is co-created by Bill Lawrence, who is also behind Ted Lasso. This marks Lawrence’s achievement of having four ongoing TV shows simultaneously: the currently airing Shrinking season 3, the forthcoming season 4 of Ted Lasso, and the in-development Bad Monkey season 2.
Critics have responded positively to Rooster, with the show boasting an 87% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews. Praise frequently centers on Carell’s performance and the show’s premise.
Subscribers and viewers can look forward to nine more episodes, which will be released on a weekly schedule. New episodes air Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
As Bill Lawrence and his team continue to deliver content, Rooster has positioned itself as an addition to the adult comedy genre on streaming platforms.
