Ridley Scott's Prometheus tops Netflix charts 15 years later. Discover the sci-fi prequel that revived the Alien saga's legacy.

AceShowbiz - Prometheus landed at number one on the global Netflix charts nearly 15 years after its initial theatrical release, surprising audiences by surpassing enduring favorites like The Rip and popular family films such as The Addams Family. This achievement marks a resurgence of interest in the science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, who originally launched the iconic Alien franchise in 1979.
The Alien saga, which includes the classic original by Ridley Scott, James Cameron’s acclaimed sequel Aliens, and David Fincher’s divisive Alien 3, experienced uneven reception until the release of Prometheus in 2012. This film, which sparked discussion among longtime fans, now seems to have cultivated a strong following, as evidenced by its recent streaming success.
Prometheus features a notable cast led by Noomi Rapace, alongside Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, and Logan Marshall-Green. With a production budget reported at $130 million, the film was shot using 3D technology on practical sets and went on to earn over $400 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing entry in the Alien series to date. Its critical reception holds a “Certified Fresh” rating of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following Prometheus, Ridley Scott directed the sequel Alien: Covenant, which grossed $270 million globally on a $100 million budget. The franchise continued with Alien: Romulus, released a couple of years ago, which achieved $350 million in worldwide box office revenue.
Despite this recent success, Prometheus’s reign atop Netflix was short-lived. It was recently dethroned by the Spanish-language mystery thriller Firebreak, directed by David Victori. This film stars Belén Cuesta and Diana Gómez, known for their roles in Money Heist, and follows a gripping story about a woman whose daughter disappears during a family vacation, while a wildfire threatens the nearby forest.
According to FlixPatrol, Firebreak has quickly become the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide, outperforming not only Prometheus but also new releases like the World War II drama The Swedish Connection and the spy thriller The Saint starring Val Kilmer. Firebreak is currently available for viewing on Netflix.
