AceShowbiz - Before Drake rose to fame, he struggled to find acceptance within the tight-knit Young Money crew led by Lil Wayne. Director Adam Bhala Lough recently shared a revealing story about this early period while discussing his experiences during the creation of the documentary The Carter.
Speaking with journalist Andre Gee, Lough reflected on the atmosphere around Lil Wayne and his team during the peak success of Wayne's landmark album, Tha Carter III. He recalled that Drake initially had difficulty fitting in with the group’s dynamic.
“At one point they wouldn’t even let Drake on the bus,” Lough said, emphasizing how Drake was seen as “such a dork” that the members of Young Money excluded him from that core social space.
Lough went on to explain how intense the environment could be at the time. Several people close to the crew were associated with street life, including real Blood gang members present regularly, which created an intimidating vibe for outsiders, including himself and Drake.
“There were real Blood gang members around all the time. I was intimidated by them too,” Lough admitted, underscoring the tough atmosphere that Drake faced.
Despite this initial awkwardness and exclusion, things soon changed as Drake’s music career took off. Once he started selling millions of records, his status within Young Money transformed completely.
“When he started selling millions and millions of records, it was a different story entirely,” said Lough, highlighting the dramatic shift in how Drake was embraced by the group.
Eventually, Drake became one of the label’s most successful artists.
