AceShowbiz - Miley Cyrus has openly shared how her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was a protective presence during their time filming the Disney Channel series Hannah Montana. Despite the challenges child stars often face on set, Miley recalled that her dad’s constant presence shielded her from potential harm and exploitation.
In a Variety interview published on March 18, Miley, 33, reflected on the darker side of child acting, where some young performers have reportedly experienced mistreatment from adults or producers. She emphasized that Billy Ray Cyrus, 64, offered her a safeguard simply by being there every day. "My parents didn't need me to be famous to survive or to be stable," Miley said, noting that her father was already a successful country singer before joining the show in 2006 as her TV dad, Robby Stewart.
Miley explained that unlike many child actors, she was never burdened with the responsibility of financially supporting her family. "What happens to a lot of these kids is their parents want it more than they do, or the kids become responsible for the entire income of the family," she pointed out. "That was never my job. Every penny I ever made went into my bank account because my parents were good." On Hannah Montana, Miley portrayed both Miley Stewart and her popstar alter ego, Hannah Montana, from 2006 to 2011.
Though fans may remember the close father-daughter bond they portrayed on screen, Miley has acknowledged that her real-life relationship with Billy Ray has had its ups and downs. Born Destiny Hope in November 1992 to Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, Miley’s family dynamic evolved over time, especially after her parents’ split in 2022.
One significant factor that helped Miley avoid the negative experiences some child actors endure was never being left alone on set. "My dad was on set every single day, so there was nothing that could happen that he wouldn't know about," Miley said. "There was never a time where I was going to be alone in that dressing room." During the five-year run of the Disney Channel series, Billy Ray Cyrus had a dressing room connected to Miley’s. Between these rooms was a kitchen-turned-office where Miley’s grandmother, Loretta "Mammie" Finley, managed her fan club and kept additional watch over her.
Miley also said that having her real father play her on-screen dad made acting easier. "My dad always says, 'When you knock ’em out, you don’t need a judge.' We knocked ’em out," she recalled about their auditions. "It was so obvious, after all the other dads, that you can’t fake the kind of connection that we have. The inside jokes, the nicknames, the handshakes, singing the songs together. It was a TKO."
Over a decade after Hannah Montana wrapped in 2011, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus’ relationship eventually ended, with the couple divorcing in spring 2022. Billy Ray shares other children with Tish, including son Braison, 31, and daughter Noah, 26, and is also the adoptive father of her two eldest children, Brandi, 38, and Trace, 37. He has a son, Christopher, 33, with ex Kristen Luckey.
Following their separation, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus experienced a two-year period of estrangement amid family tensions. Nevertheless, Miley remained close to her mother, serving as maid of honor at Tish’s 2023 wedding to Dominic Purcell.
Their reconciliation began last year when Miley wrote a song titled "Secrets" as a peace offering to her father. The track featured Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, members of Fleetwood Mac, which Miley noted is her dad’s favorite band. The lyrics, "Call off all your forces / A white flag in the war," symbolize Miley’s desire to mend their relationship.
Billy Ray Cyrus shared his pride for Miley in June when she confirmed they had ended their long-standing estrangement. He posted on Instagram praising her new music video for "Easy Lover," demonstrating his support and admiration for his daughter’s career.
In an emotional moment reported by CBS Sunday Morning on October 5, Miley revealed that Billy Ray Cyrus cried when she gave him the song "Secrets" for his birthday. "You don’t see your dad cry a lot," Miley said. "But with me and my dad, we just..." The singer shared that her father later posted on Instagram that "One great song can do more for the soul than a million therapy sessions."
Fans will soon witness the renewed bond between Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus in the upcoming Disney+ Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, premiering on March 24. The special will feature a heartfelt reunion, including a tender hug shared in their Stewart family kitchen.
Miley explained to Variety how her perspective on Hannah Montana has evolved: "I used to think of Hannah as something separate from myself. This special is my reclaiming of merging Hannah and Miley together."
Throughout her career and personal challenges, it is clear that the protective presence of Billy Ray Cyrus on the Hannah Montana set played a crucial role in safeguarding Miley from the pitfalls often faced by child stars. Their story is one of complicated family dynamics, reconciliation, and enduring love, both on and off screen.
