ScreenRant’s Tatiana Hullender recently spoke with Byron Howard, one of the directors of Encanto, during a press event marking the home release of Zootopia 2. Howard shared insights about the creative process behind the film and touched on the chances of a second installment.

Byron Howard explained that animated films typically require about five years to complete. He noted the common overlap among creative teams working on different projects, pointing out that many of the people involved in Encanto also contributed to other recent Disney films. “It’s a matter of strategy,” he said, “how to overlap the projects as they get done.”

Howard described the making of Encanto as “an amazing experience,” with the cast and crew forming a strong bond akin to a family, which extended to their connection with Colombian culture. He emphasized the unique significance of creating a movie about closely connected family members during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when many people experienced isolation.

“To be making a movie about a dozen people in a house together was incredible,” Howard reflected. He expressed hope that an Encanto sequel could be released when audiences are no longer burdened by pandemic-related restrictions, allowing the magic to reach theaters under better circumstances.

Although Howard acknowledged a deep affection for the film, discussions about a sequel have been ongoing for some time. In March 2025, voice actor John Leguizamo, who lent his voice to a character in the original film, told People magazine that producers were exploring ways to expand the magical world of the Madrigals. While no official announcement has been made, there have been reports about potential storylines.

Stephanie Beatriz, who voices Mirabel, also weighed in on the status of Encanto 2 in 2023 during an interview with ScreenRant. She admitted she had not heard any concrete news about a sequel, joking that she hadn’t “heard jack s--t.” Beatriz speculated that the directors’ busy schedules might be responsible for the delay, suggesting that progress could happen once their current commitments are completed.

Beatriz expressed enthusiasm for working with the creative team again, praising their collaborative spirit and the incredible experience they shared. She also mentioned the ongoing curiosity from fans, noting that whenever she visits Disney parks, people often ask about the sequel. “I know fans of the film are really, really eager to know if it’s going to get a sequel,” she said. “I would love to do that... I think there’s a ton of story to be told and so many people who would love to see that.”
