On Friday, March 13, Hetfield, 62, shared a photo from the underwater proposal on Metallica’s official Instagram account. The image shows the rockstar wearing his scuba gear and mask while holding a sign that read: “Adriana Gillett Will You Marry Me?”

Beside him, fashion designer Adriana Gillett, 45, is seen holding the ring box and giving a thumbs-up with her left hand, confirming the joyful acceptance. The caption accompanying the photo simply stated, “She said yes!”

Gillett also posted the same photo to her Instagram account, describing the proposal as the best birthday surprise. She wrote, “The BEST birthday trip surprise ? Swimming with whale sharks on Friday the 13th ? with the most unique, special, and romantic proposal a Pisces could ever imagine ? In a sea full of fish, we caught each other ? Thank you God for putting us together ??.”

James Hetfield had filed for divorce from his wife of 25 years, costume designer Francesca Tomasi, in 2022. They share three children: daughters Cali, 27, Marcella, 24, and son Castor, 25. Reports indicate that Hetfield and London-born Gillett began dating in 2023.

The couple will have a few months to enjoy their engagement before Metallica resumes their ongoing M72 world tour. The band is scheduled to perform on May 9 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens, Greece, followed by concerts in Bucharest, Romania on May 13, and Chrozow, Poland on May 19. After wrapping up summer dates across Europe and the U.K., Metallica will launch a 24-show residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas starting October 1.
