AceShowbiz - Though the original The Walking Dead series has officially ended, the franchise continues to thrive with spinoffs that keep expanding its post-apocalyptic universe. Currently, two series remain active: The Walking Dead: Dead City, set in New York and focusing on Maggie and Negan, and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which follows its title character on a journey through Europe. These shows are exploring new storylines and locations within the zombie-ravaged world, maintaining fan interest in the franchise’s rich narrative landscape.
Despite the ongoing success of these spinoffs, fans have long awaited a particular development—a crossover or reunion series that brings back some of the franchise’s most beloved characters. In a recent interview on The Brandon Davis Show, executive producer and special effects expert Greg Nicotero shed light on this possibility. He confirmed that discussions are still underway about potential future projects that could unite key characters, including the much-anticipated reunion of Rick and Daryl.
"There's been a lot of talk about that sort of reunion-type show where we get a lot of the great characters (together). I mean, we've been talking about it for a couple years," Nicotero revealed. This statement hints that a reunion series remains a priority behind the scenes, though no concrete plans have been announced yet.
The pairing of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick and Norman Reedus’s Daryl became a fan-favorite dynamic throughout the original series. Together, they appeared in over 100 episodes before the two were separated during Season 9. Their last shared screen moment was in the episode "What Comes After," which aired on November 4, 2018. This episode is nearing its tenth anniversary, marking a significant milestone since the characters were last seen together.
Since then, Lincoln has reprised his role as Rick in the miniseries The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, while Reedus is preparing for the fourth season of his own spinoff series. Despite these individual projects, the two have yet to cross paths on screen again. Daryl Dixon’s storyline notably involves an ongoing search for Rick, keeping the hope alive for fans eager to see the duo reunited.
Nicotero also shared insights into the creative process that led to Lincoln’s return. Initially, a movie was planned to explore Rick’s story, but it evolved into a six-episode miniseries in response to fan demand. "Even before the Rick and Michonne show, it was going to be a movie. We're going to do a Walking Dead movie. And then it was like, 'Oh, well, we do six episodes.' And the people wanted to see what happened to Rick, that was it," he explained. This approach highlights how audience enthusiasm can shape the franchise’s direction.
Reading between the lines, Nicotero’s remarks suggest that the success and reception of Rick’s return could pave the way for a new series focused on the reunion with Daryl and possibly other key characters. However, AMC’s approach to expanding the franchise has been cautious, and no official timeline has been provided for when such a reunion project might materialize.
As the tenth anniversary of Rick and Daryl’s last joint appearance approaches, it presents a meaningful opportunity for the franchise to deliver the reunion fans have been eagerly waiting for. While the details remain under wraps, the ongoing discussions and Nicotero’s comments keep the possibility alive that these iconic characters will share the screen once more, continuing the story in a way that honors their deep connection and fan devotion.
