Though it initially seemed unlikely, Tobias Menzies made a notable return to Outlander in the new season’s premiere—albeit in a voiceover capacity. Two years ago, when asked about reprising his roles as Claire’s husband Frank Randall and Frank’s ancestor Black Jack Randall for the final season, Menzies had expressed he would not be returning. "It would be great," he said at the time, "but no, you will not see me."

While Menzies did not appear on screen, his voice featured prominently in a key scene that began streaming with the Season 8 launch. The moment occurs as Jamie Fraser examines Frank’s author photo on his last book, The Soul of a Rebel: The Scottish Roots of the American Revolution, which Brianna brought from the 1980s. A voice—either Frank’s or possibly Black Jack’s—asks Jamie, "Is it my face you see looming in the darkness?" just before Claire enters the room.

This dialogue reveals Jamie’s distress, not only because Frank resembles his brutal ancestor but also due to Frank’s book predicting Jamie's death in battle at King’s Mountain within a year. This sets a tense tone for the season and raises questions about Jamie’s fate going forward.

Showrunner and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, alongside executive producer Maril Davis, shared with TVLine that they had wanted Menzies involved in the final season from early on. "He was interested, except his schedule was so crazy,” Davis explained. “So I said to him, ‘If you can't be here in person, would you be willing to do some voiceover?’ That was our Plan B. He was absolutely happy and thrilled to do it.”

Roberts expressed excitement about hearing Menzies back in character, even if only through audio. "I was like, ‘Oh man, this is Season 1 again,’” he said with a grin. “It was just so good, because he gives so many different variations. It's brilliant. He's brilliant.”

Davis added that having Menzies involved felt like a meaningful full-circle moment. “Anytime you can get Tobias, even if it’s just a little bit of Tobias, is always a good thing.”

Roberts also acknowledged Menzies’ cleverness in teasing his presence. “He was very clever,” Roberts laughed. “He was saying his presence will be felt, and I was like, ‘Yes, it will!’”
