AceShowbiz - The Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, buzzed with excitement Thursday night as attendees experienced an exclusive early screening of Apple TV’s upcoming family dramedy Margo’s Got Money Troubles during the opening night of SXSW.
The festival showcased the first three episodes of the eight-part series adapted from Rufi Thorpe’s 2024 novel, eliciting hearty laughter from the audience before a Q&A session featuring series creator David E. Kelley, executive producer Eva Anderson, and stars Elle Fanning, Michelle Pfeiffer, Thaddea Graham, among others.
Introducing the screening, Kelley humorously warned viewers about watching three consecutive opening and closing credits, joking, "This is our first opportunity as a group to see it with an audience. So we're really excited about that. You're going to see three episodes. One quick disclaimer, you'll have to see three main titles and three end credits, so just bear with that."
In Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Fanning stars as Margo, a 20-year-old navigating life’s challenges after an unexpected pregnancy resulting from a relationship with her college professor, played by Michael Angarano. When her professor abandons her, Margo leaves college and turns to an OnlyFans account in a desperate attempt to earn money.
The show also features Michelle Pfeiffer as Shyanne, Margo’s mother—a former Hooter's waitress—whose relationship with her daughter combines warmth with tension. Nick Offerman plays Margo’s father, a former professional wrestler, adding further dimension to the quirky family dynamic.
During the post-screening discussion, Fanning praised Rufi Thorpe’s colorful characters, describing them as "really lovable but also really messy." She noted that Margo’s innocence fuels an endearing optimism throughout her struggles, making the character relatable and captivating for viewers.
Pfeiffer expressed her affection for her role, sharing that she "knew she was going to love" playing Shyanne. She also joked about working alongside her husband, Kelley, remarking on his preference for actors to direct their questions to the director, adding a lighthearted touch to the creative process.
The event also welcomed Elle Fanning’s sister, Dakota Fanning, who, alongside Elle, serves as an executive producer through their banner Lewellen Pictures. The series is produced for Apple TV+ by A24, with Kelley as writer and showrunner. Executive producers include Kelley, Matthew Tinker, Elle and Dakota Fanning, Brittany Kahan Ward, as well as Nicole Kidman and Per Saari from Blossom Films. Author Rufi Thorpe, Eva Anderson, and Pfeiffer also hold executive producer roles.
Margo’s Got Money Troubles is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on April 15 with three episodes at launch, followed by weekly new episodes until May 20, promising audiences a blend of sharp humor and heartfelt family drama.
