AceShowbiz - Donald Trump responded sharply to criticism from Robert De Niro following his recent State of the Union address.
On Thursday, February 26, Trump took to Truth Social to express his disapproval of De Niro’s remarks. He described the actor as “another sick and demented person” with what he called an “extremely Low IQ,” accusing him of not knowing “what he is doing or saying,” and hinted that some of De Niro’s actions might be “seriously CRIMINAL.”
Trump also commented on De Niro’s emotional reaction during a recent public appearance, stating that when he saw the actor break down in tears, “much like a child would do,” he realized that De Niro “may be even sicker than Crazy Rosie O'Donnell.” He then referenced O'Donnell’s current stay in Ireland and her attempts to figure out how to return to the United States.
Following his critique of both De Niro and O'Donnell, Trump boasted about his view of the country’s current status. He claimed, “The good news is that America is now Bigger, Better, Richer, and Stronger than ever before,” and suggested this reality “is driving them absolutely crazy.”
The exchange comes amid heightened political tensions, with Trump also targeting Democratic Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. He suggested they “should actually get on a boat” and leave the country alongside De Niro, referencing their vocal criticism during his State of the Union speech on Tuesday, February 24.
Earlier in the week, Robert De Niro spoke candidly about the political divide in the United States and openly criticized Trump for his role in it. During an appearance on MS NOW's "The Best People" podcast on Monday, February 23, the Oscar-winning actor called Trump “the enemy of this country” and urged unity among Americans.
De Niro emphasized the importance of uplifting and uniting people, stating, “You have to lift people up. You have to bring them together, period. You can't divide people. You can't win that way.” At one point, he became emotional, fighting back tears as he spoke about the need for solidarity.
He further expressed a sense of responsibility among citizens to protect the nation, saying, “It’s almost like destiny to have this thing there, attempting to destroy this country, and maybe not even understanding why. So it’s up to us to protect the country. We have to save the country.”
De Niro also delivered a speech titled "State of the Swamp" on the same day as Trump’s State of the Union address, held in Washington, D.C., and streamed via YouTube. In this event, he shared feeling “betrayed” by his country and stressed that while the nation doesn’t have to be perfect, it must return to “the values that gave us our strength and humanity.” He urged those devoted to the Constitution and rule of law to unite and “take the streets together” to reclaim the country.
Adding to the political discourse, Trump also commented on Rosie O'Donnell’s recent secret trip back to the United States. After having left the country during Trump’s second term, O'Donnell revealed on SiriusXM’s Cuomo Mornings on Friday, February 13, that she was home for two weeks without informing many people, mainly to visit family.
In addition to his remarks about O'Donnell and De Niro, Trump has publicly criticized other celebrities who have taken a stance against him. For example, he recently commented on George Clooney and Amal Clooney becoming French citizens, calling them “two of the worst political prognosticators of all time” and criticizing France’s current crime issues.
De Niro has long been an advocate for progressive causes, including climate change and gay rights, and has been outspoken against Trump since the president’s first term. This ongoing feud underscores the deep political divisions between the two figures.
During his State of the Union address, Trump highlighted the nation’s economic progress, claiming it was “roaring like never before.” Meanwhile, De Niro’s counterprogramming speech reflected his disappointment and call for renewed national unity.
The public exchange between Donald Trump and Robert De Niro highlights the intense polarization in American politics, with both men using their platforms to rally support for their opposing viewpoints as the nation continues to grapple with division and calls for change.
