AceShowbiz - It: Welcome to Derry fans can expect an even more terrifying experience when the series returns for its second season. The acclaimed HBO horror show, fresh off a major awards victory, is reportedly preparing to surpass the chilling impact of its debut season, according to its creator.
Andy Muschietti, co-creator and executive producer of It: Welcome to Derry, provided an update at the 2026 Saturn Awards press conference. The series had just won the Saturn Award for Best Horror Television Series, beating strong contenders such as The Last of Us and another Stephen King adaptation, The Institute.
When asked about the future of the Derry universe, Muschietti acknowledged the high expectations following the success of the first season. He told reporters, "We're very proud that the expectations are high after the first season. I think we're going to deliver something that is greater." This statement was reported by Screenrant.
Despite the positive reception and accolades, HBO has yet to officially announce a renewal for a second season of It: Welcome to Derry. However, this delay does not appear to stem from any doubts about the show’s performance. In fact, HBO CEO Casey Bloys addressed the situation in late January, clarifying that the first season performed exceptionally well for the network.
Bloys emphasized that the show’s success makes producing a second season a straightforward business decision. He also confirmed that Andy Muschietti and his sister and producing partner, Barbara Muschietti, are actively developing story ideas. Bloys said the project is "not in limbo."
The creative team behind the series has previously outlined an ambitious multi-season plan. Showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane have hinted at a three-season arc designed to explore different periods of Pennywise’s reign of terror in Derry. This approach promises to deepen the mythology and expand the story’s scope significantly.
With both critical acclaim and viewer enthusiasm fueling the momentum, It: Welcome to Derry Season 2 is well-positioned to broaden its dark narrative and deliver more horror to its audience in the near future.
