WGA cancels its 2026 Writers Guild Awards ceremony amid staff strike over labor practices. An alternative LA event for nominees will be planned.
- March 8, 2026
AceShowbiz - The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) has officially canceled its 2026 Writers Guild Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, which was scheduled for March 8. The cancellation comes amid an ongoing strike by the union’s own non-supervisory staff who are protesting alleged unfair labor practices during initial contract negotiations.
In a letter addressed to the ceremony’s presenters and participants, WGAW president Michele Mulroney explained the decision to cancel the event. She assured recipients that an alternative celebration for the Los Angeles-based nominees would be planned at a later date. Mulroney emphasized the union’s respect for the staff’s right to strike but also noted the desire to avoid an event complicated by the presence of picket lines.
The striking staff members are represented by the Pacific Northwest Staff Union (PNWSU), which has been actively picketing outside the WGAW headquarters for over a week. According to statements from the Writers Guild Staff Union (WGSU), union management hinted at the potential cancellation of the awards during recent contract negotiations if the staff did not accept what the union described as a "broken last offer" by the end of that week.
The staff union also accused guild management of attempting to create division between union staff and WGA membership by using the awards ceremony as leverage in the negotiations. This internal conflict has created significant challenges for the guild, especially given the high profile of the annual event.
The Los Angeles ceremony was planned to be hosted by Atsuko Okatsuka at the JW Marriott L.A. LIVE, with a livestream on the Writers Guild Awards West’s official YouTube channel. However, due to the strike, the event will not proceed as originally scheduled.
Meanwhile, the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) is moving forward with its awards ceremony, which is set to take place simultaneously in New York City at the Edison Ballroom. The East ceremony will be hosted by comedian Roy Wood Jr.. Although the East and West guilds collaborate on contracts, they operate as separate unions. Additionally, the WGAE’s staff union, organized with the United Steelworkers, is not currently on strike.
This development marks a rare and significant disruption in the annual awards cycle for the Writers Guild of America West. The union’s leadership continues to navigate the delicate balance between supporting its striking staff and honoring the achievements of its members through celebratory events.
