Annie is a bright, determined young woman from Tennessee, on track to become a doctor. However, traumatic flashbacks to her mother’s illness and death weigh heavily on her. Eventually, overwhelmed during hospital rounds, Annie abandons medical school and takes up work as a tour guide at Graceland, the home of Elvis Presley.

On the fateful day of the apocalypse—referred to as The Day and previously depicted in Season 1, Episode 7—Annie is at work. The show successfully rekindles a sense of dread despite the audience's foreknowledge of the disaster’s outcome. Acting swiftly, Annie gathers supplies and leads a female security guard to the basement for safety. Unfortunately, the guard falls and breaks her leg on the stairs.

With her medical knowledge, Annie tends to the injured guard as ash clouds obscure the sky outside. They rely on Sterno cans for warmth, wrapped in blankets amid the freezing conditions. Despite Annie’s efforts, the guard succumbs about a month later. In an emotional moment, Annie ventures outside to bury her in the backyard, underscoring the harsh new reality.

Fast forward to Day 689, nearly two years after the catastrophe. A ray of sunlight filters through Graceland’s windows, tempting Annie to step outside. This figure, named Link and portrayed by Thomas Doherty (known for Tell Me Lies), signals a new dynamic in Annie’s survival story.
