My New Band Believe initially emerged in February 2025 with the release of ‘Lecture 25’, marking Picton’s fresh creative direction after his tenure with Black Midi. Now, anticipation is building for their self-titled debut album, scheduled to drop on April 10 via Rough Trade Records, with pre-orders already available.
Alongside the album announcement, the band has shared ‘Numerology’, a dynamic non-album single featured on a special bonus 10" edition and a limited Deluxe CD release. The track fuses frenetic acoustic guitar riffs with shifting moods, traversing dance rhythms and psychedelic textures. Lyrically, it explores themes of chance and possibility within the fleeting span of “one night,” capturing both exhilaration and risk. The accompanying lo-fi music video enhances its hallucinatory vibe, inviting listeners into the band’s immersive world.
The creative spark for the debut album struck Picton during a feverish delirium in a Chinese hotel room, battling a sudden illness. In this vulnerable state, he experienced vivid bursts of “weird imagery” and fragmented text, which he later weaved into the album’s compositions. This surreal genesis gives the record an intimate and otherworldly atmosphere.
Assuming the role of bandleader and an “unreliable but charismatic narrator,” Picton is joined by talented collaborators including Kiran Leonard, Caius Williams, Steve Noble, and Andrew Cheetham. The album leans heavily on acoustic instrumentation, employing minimal reverb and electronic effects, and prominently features a full string section, creating a richly textured yet organic soundscape.
The tracklist for My New Band Believe’s debut album is as follows:
1. Target Practice
2. In the Blink of an Eye
3. Heart of Darkness
4. Love Story
5. Pearls
6. Opposite Teacher
7. Actress
8. One Night
Following the album release, the band will embark on their first headline tour, kicking off in Glasgow on April 28. The itinerary includes shows in Leeds, Manchester, London, Bristol, Cambridge, and concludes in Oxford on May 5. Additionally, they will perform at the Rewire Festival in The Hague on April 11.
This new project from Picton arrives in the wake of the “indefinite” hiatus announced last summer by Black Midi, the band he co-founded in 2017 alongside Geordie Greep. Known for their experimental art-rock sound, Black Midi garnered critical acclaim before pausing activities, paving the way for Picton to explore fresh musical territories with My New Band Believe.
