Gerard Butler's "Greenland 2: Migration" struggles at the box office, grossing $15M against a $90M budget, overshadowed by "The Lord of the Rings" re-release.

AceShowbiz - The past few days have been disappointing for Gerard Butler’s latest film, the sci-fi sequel Greenland 2: Migration. The movie has slipped out of the domestic box office top five, even being outperformed by the 25th anniversary re-release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. So far, Greenland 2 has managed to gross approximately $15 million globally, a troubling figure given its substantial reported budget of $90 million.
In fact, this sequel marks one of the most expensive projects that Butler has led in the last decade, alongside his earlier sci-fi miss, Geostorm. During its opening weekend, Greenland 2 only raked in around $8 million domestically, which is about half of what Jason Statham achieved with his film The Beekeeper two years ago. That film went on to gross around $160 million worldwide and has sparked plans for a sequel.
To add to the contrast, The Beekeeper 2 is currently in development and is expected to be released in the coming months. Statham and director David Ayer reunited shortly after The Beekeeper with another project, A Working Man, which itself garnered nearly $100 million globally. Both films have resonated well with audiences, with The Beekeeper boasting a "verified hot" 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus states, “Fast-paced and full of action, The Beekeeper delivers everything Jason Statham fans will be looking for.”
As for Greenland 2, it received mixed reviews. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, this sequel came out five years after the original Greenland gained popularity on home video following its lackluster theatrical run. Unfortunately, Greenland 2 does not seem to have resonated with audiences in the same way. It is possible that the cast and crew overestimated the original's cultural impact.
With these box office struggles, Gerard Butler finds himself in a challenging position, especially when compared to the success of Jason Statham. It will be interesting to observe how these two action stars navigate their careers moving forward, particularly in the wake of their latest projects. While Greenland 2 aimed for success, it appears to have fallen short, raising questions about its future in the competitive film landscape.
