When the series finale aired in 2004, it marked an emotional milestone for both the cast and the fans. Understanding the significance of their time together, the actors took mementos from the show. In a 2021 interview with People, they reminisced about their favorite souvenirs ahead of the much-anticipated Friends reunion.
During this reflective conversation, Matthew Perry, who portrayed Chandler, shared that he had taken a cookie jar from the set, which he gifted to Lisa Kudrow, known for her role as Phoebe. This prop, which had occupied a spot next to the fridge in Monica's (played by Courteney Cox) apartment, held special significance for both Perry and Kudrow as it symbolized a shared joke. However, unbeknownst to Kudrow at first, Perry had hidden an extra surprise inside the cookie jar.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in 2004, Matthew Perry explained the story behind the gift. “There’s a cookie jar that has a clock on it that was over the fridge,” he recounted. “One time I asked Lisa Kudrow, 'What time is it?' and she looked up at that to tell me the time, and we all laughed really hard, so I made arrangements to give it to her.”
In a later interview with Jimmy Kimmel in 2020, Kudrow discussed the cookie jar's significance, humorously noting her concern about whether Perry had received permission to take it. “The first thing I asked was, ‘This is so nice. Did you get permission?’” she recalled. She humorously added that her car would be searched every night when leaving the Warner Bros. lot, highlighting the light-hearted but strict policies surrounding set items.
However, the emotional impact of Perry's gift deepened after his untimely passing in October 2023. Kudrow discovered a heartfelt note tucked away inside the cookie jar, which she revealed during a January 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. When asked about any items she might have taken from the set, Kudrow shared her surprise upon finding the note. “Matthew gave that to me at the end of our last episode,” she said. “I had recently found the note that he had in it for me. I hadn’t opened it up or looked inside of it.”
This revelation not only underscores the enduring bond between Perry and Kudrow but also highlights the heartfelt gestures that made their time on Friends so special. As fans continue to cherish the moments from this iconic series, the legacy of the friendships formed on set remains a testament to the show's lasting impact.
