AceShowbiz - Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for The Rookie Season 8 premiere. The latest season of The Rookie began with an exciting adventure in Prague during the episode titled "Czech Mate." The storyline picks up just three days post the Season 7 finale, where the notorious defense attorney turned criminal mastermind, Monica Stevens (portrayed by Bridget Regan), collaborates with a joint task force from the FBI and LAPD to dismantle an arms dealer's operation.
This episode serves as a conclusion to the narrative arc surrounding Monica Stevens that originated in Season 6. Though "Czech Mate" was engaging and entertaining, it offered a rather subdued resolution for Monica, leading to the question of whether it is time for The Rookie to move on from her role as the primary antagonist.
Throughout Seasons 6 and 7, Monica committed numerous heinous acts, yet in "Czech Mate," she surprisingly transitions into a cooperative ally for the LAPD's Mid-Wilshire Division and FBI Supervisory Special Agent Matthew Garza (played by Felix Solis). This shift may suggest that the writers are hesitant to fully embrace her villainous character or are attempting to present her as a charming antagonist, one that viewers can love to hate.
However, the lack of conflict surrounding Monica in this episode was frustrating. It felt like a half-hearted effort to redeem her character from her past misdeeds. Viewers should not forget that back in Season 6, Monica orchestrated a plot to frame Officer Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) for murder, aided by the corrupt LAPD detective Pearson (Daniel Bonjour). She also exploited LAPD psychiatrist Dr. Blair London (Danielle Campbell) to steal sensitive patient information, which she sold on the black market, resulting in the untimely deaths of innocent officers.
Moreover, Monica was prepared to betray Dr. London to a notorious criminal, Jakob Olmstead (Casper Andreas), until John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) intervened. These dark actions are only the beginning of her dubious history, which makes her sudden transformation into a helpful ally hard to accept for many viewers. As we venture into Season 8, it may be time for The Rookie to explore new antagonists and storylines, allowing Monica Stevens to fade into the background.
