Hamm played Don Draper in seven seasons of Mad Men from 2007-2015, garnering Hamm multiple awards, including Golden Globes and a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Accentuated by Don Draper, who always looked impeccable in his suit, tie, and fedora, DC Comics fans saw a possible Superman in Jon Hamm.

When Mad Men began in 2007, Brandon Routh had just played a younger and more emotionally vulnerable Man of Steel in director Bryan Singer's Superman Returns the year before. Superman movies came under the auspices of Christopher Nolan as executive producer after his blockbuster success with The Dark Knight Trilogy. Nolan and Warner Bros. selected Zack Snyder to direct the Superman reboot that became Man of Steel, which premiered in summer 2013. In the late 2000s and early 2010s, as Man of Steel was in development, Jon Hamm's name was regularly in the mix to play Superman.

Although Hamm was pushing 40, fans imagined Mad Men's series lead as a possible older Superman, like the one seen in DC's classic Kingdom Come graphic novel. Mad Men's creator, executive producer, and showrunner, Matthew Weiner, was well aware that Jon Hamm was being talked about to play Superman, and Weiner worked references to the 'Hamm of Steel' into two Mad Men episodes he wrote. During a dinner party at Pete Campbell's home in Mad Men season 5, episode 5, "Signal 30," Don Draper tears off his sport coat, suit, and tie to come to the rescue when Trudy Campbell's kitchen faucet springs a leak. As Don, in his shirt sleeves, heroically fixes the faucet, the wives present, Trudy, Cynthia Cosgrove, and Megan Draper, watch adoringly, and Cynthia remarks, "Look! It's Superman!"

Superman comes up again in Mad Men season 6, episode 6, "For Immediate Release," when Megan tells Don, "I love you like this... Fearless. And I want to do whatever I can to make sure you do not fail. Then you can jump from the balcony and fly to work, like Superman." Jon Hamm was never interested in playing Superman, a role that went to Henry Cavill in Man of Steel. Cavill reprised the last son of Krypton in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, two versions of Justice League, and a cameo in Black Adam.
