AceShowbiz - Twenty-five years after captivating the world with In the Mood for Love, a cinematic masterpiece revered for its artistic vision and sumptuous aesthetics, director Wong Kar-wai makes a grand return to the screen, albeit in a new medium. While his subsequent projects have seen a gradual decline in storytelling quality—a shift some attribute to the absence of longtime collaborator and cinematographer Christopher Doyle—Wong embarked on an unprecedented venture into television in 2013. After nearly a decade in production, his ambitious new series, Blossoms Shanghai (also known as ç¹èб), finally premiered on Tencent Video in China in December 2023 and is now available for U.S. audiences via the Criterion Channel.
Set against the backdrop of 1990s Shanghai during its economic boom, Blossoms Shanghai clearly holds deep personal significance for Wong. The series stands out not only for its director's star power and the inherent glamour but also for its heavy use of the Shanghainese dialect, a language that has been in decline for the past seven decades. This choice lends the drama an authentic, intimate feel rarely seen in projects emerging from Mainland China, creating a vivid tapestry that almost manages to overshadow its narrative imperfections.
However, the transition from feature film to a sprawling 30-episode series (with only six provided for review) presents a significant challenge, particularly in pacing. While Wong’s signature stylistic touch remains undeniably prominent, imbuing Blossoms Shanghai with an artistic flair uncommon in Chinese episodic television, the narrative struggles to maintain the same level of brilliance. Writer Qin Wen weaves an intricate tale populated by a colorful cast of characters, yet the overall storytelling feels as if it’s missing that special, cohesive magic often found in Wong’s self-written, directed, and produced cinematic works.
Wong Kar-wai has historically earned a reputation for being a demanding collaborator, yet the final products of his singular vision have consistently been high art. Blossoms Shanghai, despite its visual splendor and personal resonance, cannot quite measure up to the narrative precision and emotional depth of his undisputed film masterpieces. It is a visually stunning and deeply personal journey back to his roots, but one where the grandeur and shine almost, but not entirely, overcome its structural and storytelling flaws, leaving viewers with a beautiful, yet somewhat uneven, experience.
