AceShowbiz - Renowned action star Liam Neeson is bringing one of his under-the-radar contemporary Westerns to a broader audience. His 2021 neo-Western/drug crime thriller, The Marksman, is set to join the streaming catalog of Netflix, offering viewers a fresh chance to discover the film starting November 14.
In The Marksman, Neeson portrays an Arizona border rancher who reluctantly becomes the protector of a young boy fleeing brutal cartel assassins. The film co-stars Katheryn Winnick and Dylan Kenin. Previously, it was only available on Prime Video and Tubi, making its Netflix debut a significant step for accessibility.
Despite Neeson's consistent appeal, The Marksman received a mixed critical reception. Reviewers largely panned it, leading to a "Rotten" score of 37% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 100 reviews. However, the film resonated strongly with general audiences, earning an impressive 83% on the Popcornmeter, cementing its status as a fan-favorite within Neeson's action repertoire.
Directed and co-written by Robert Lorenz, with script contributions from Chris Charles and Danny Kravitz, The Marksman recouped its $23 million budget globally. While covering production costs, it didn't quite generate a profit for Open Road Films. The film also drew comparisons to Taylor Sheridan's Sicario due to its intense drug-crime element and border narrative.
Robert Lorenz, known for producing films like Mystic River and American Sniper, reunited with Neeson for the 2023 action thriller In the Land of Saints and Sinners. This film, also featuring Kerry Condon, is currently available on both Prime Video and Amazon MGM+.
At 73, Liam Neeson remains incredibly active, with over 10 projects in various stages of development. One notable upcoming film is the post-apocalyptic horror Cold Storage, set for 2026, where he will star alongside Stranger Things veteran Joe Keery. Neeson's recent work includes Frank Drebin Jr. in The Naked Gun reboot (which grossed $100 million and streams on Paramount+ and Amazon MGM+), and Mike McCann in Ice Road: Vengeance, released directly to Prime Video.
With a busy schedule and devoted fanbase, Liam Neeson continues to solidify his legacy as one of Hollywood's most enduring action stars. Don't miss The Marksman when it premieres on Netflix starting November 14.
