AceShowbiz - Tron: Ares is steadily climbing the domestic box office charts, demonstrating unexpected resilience despite an initial lukewarm reception. The third installment in the iconic sci-fi franchise, starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and franchise veteran Jeff Bridges, debuted with an underwhelming opening weekend, falling short of its $45-50 million domestic projections by earning just $33.2 million over three days. However, recent figures from The Numbers indicate a positive shift, with Tron: Ares adding an impressive $1.858 million to its domestic total on Wednesday, October 15. This boost brings its cumulative domestic earnings to $41.94 million by the end of its first full week in theaters, positioning it as the 253rd highest-grossing science fiction movie of all time domestically.
This recent surge has allowed Tron: Ares to surpass ten other notable science fiction films on the all-time chart. Among these are 2007's Aliens vs. Predator - Requiem ($41.8 million), 2017's visually stunning Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ($40.5 million), 1998's cult classic The Faculty ($40.3 million), and 2017's live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell ($40.6 million). Perhaps most notably, Tron: Ares has now outgrossed two distinct sci-fi franchise entries starring the beloved actor Keanu Reeves. It eclipsed the 2021 legacy sequel The Matrix Resurrections ($40.46 million), which reunited Reeves with his original Matrix co-star Carrie-Anne Moss. Additionally, it surpassed Reeves' franchise-kickstarting 1989 success, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure ($40.48 million), in a single day of earnings.
The question remains how much higher Tron: Ares can ascend on the sci-fi chart. Projections suggest significant potential for continued growth. Even with a hypothetical 60% drop in its sophomore weekend—a steeper decline than its predecessor, 2010's Tron: Legacy, which saw a 56.5% dip—the film could still add at least $13.2 million, pushing its total to approximately $55.2 million by day ten. This would propel Tron: Ares an additional 43 places up the chart, allowing it to surpass films such as 2013's Riddick ($42 million), 2010's Predators ($52 million), 1989's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier ($52.2 million), 1987's iconic RoboCop ($53.4 million), and 2011's critically acclaimed Source Code ($54.7 million).
While Tron: Ares appears destined to break into the Top 200 highest-grossing domestic science fiction movies of all time, the path to profitability remains challenging. With a reported budget of roughly $180 million (the largest for any Tron movie, unadjusted for inflation), its estimated break-even point hovers around $450 million. This figure seems highly ambitious given its current trajectory and the precedent set by Tron: Legacy, which grossed $400.1 million globally after a significantly stronger opening. Despite its recent box office victories, Tron: Ares faces an uphill battle to justify its substantial production cost.
