AceShowbiz - Olivia Munn wasn't shy with her skepticism about Blue Origin's upcoming mission featuring an all-female crew. During a recent appearance on "Today With Jenna and Friends", she criticized Jeff Bezos's costly space trip.
The mission features a star-studded all-female roster: Bezos's fiancee Lauren Sanchez, Gayle King, Katy Perry, former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn.
"What are they doing?" Munn queried. "I know this probably isn't the cool thing to say, but there are so many other things that are so important in the world right now."
Munn's criticism wasn't solely based on the mission itself but also its perceived showiness and cost. She compared the brief 11-minute journey to a pricey escapade similar to Disney's Space Mountain rollercoaster. "If you wanna go to space, why do you need to tell us about it?…It's like, go up there, have a good time, come on down."
Munn's remarks extended to the financial implications. "It's so much money to go to space, and there's a lot of people who can't even afford eggs." Given the substantial rise in egg prices - 60% over the last year due to inflation and bird flu - her concerns resonate during economically challenging times.
She also hinted at environmental considerations, calling out the resource-intensive nature of space flights. When Jenna Bush Hager mentioned the crew's plan to be in "full glam" for the mission, Munn was taken aback.
She didn't mince her words, "What? They said this out loud?…What's the point? Is it historic that you guys are going on a ride? I think it's a bit gluttonous." She emphasized that space exploration should aim "to further our knowledge and to help mankind."
Conversely, the crew seems excited to mix glamor with gravity. During an interview with Elle, Sanchez enthused, "We're going to have lash extensions flying in the capsule!" The lightheartedness continued with Perry adding, "Space is going to finally be glam… We are going to put the 'a**' in astronaut."
As the countdown continues, the debate over the mission's significance and resource allocation remains a hot topic. Whether it's a lavish sideshow or a landmark moment in female space exploration, only time will tell.
