AceShowbiz - Amid the devastating wildfires that have wreaked havoc across Los Angeles, Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio has pledged $1 million to aid in recovery and relief efforts.
"The Los Angeles wildfires are devastating our city," he wrote on his Instagram story Wednesday, January 15. "I am committing $1 million in partnership with @rewild's Rapid Response Program to support both urgent needs and post-fire recovery efforts."
The funds will benefit several crucial organizations, including the LA Fire Department Foundation, California Fire Foundation, World Central Kitchen, California Community Foundation, Pasadena Humane Society, and SoCal Fire Fund.
DiCaprio's initiative is part of a larger trend, with several celebrities and corporations contributing significant amounts to fire relief efforts. Beyonce Knowles committed $2.5 million to victims of the Eaton Fire while Jamie Lee Curtis and husband Christopher Guest also pledged $1 million.
Eva Longoria, granted a $50 million award from Jeff Bezos, pledged $1 million to support fire recovery. Paris Hilton, in a show of solidarity, raised $800,000 in just 72 hours.
In addition to individual contributions, corporate giants have shown their support. Google and YouTube announced a joint donation of $15 million, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan pledged $4 million. Snapchat began its contributions with $5 million.
The media sector has not lagged behind, with Warner Bros. Discovery and the Walt Disney Company each pledging $15 million and Netflix contributing $10 million.
Even Los Angeles' sports teams united for the cause. A dozen professional teams including the Lakers, Dodgers, Rams, and Clippers together donated over $8 million to various wildfire relief organizations. This collective generosity highlights the profound community spirit in the face of these natural disasters.
Leonardo DiCaprio's donation was announced after he sparked backlash for evacuating on a private jet with his girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti and his parents.
The city remains under red flag warnings, with strong winds posing threats for further fire spread. But with high-profile individuals and organizations contributing to wildfire relief, there is hope and assistance for those affected by this natural disaster.
