The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended Oscar nomination voting, delayed the announcement date, and rescheduled key events due to the raging wildfires in Los Angeles.

AceShowbiz - The devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles have forced the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to adjust some of its plans for the upcoming Oscars. Originally set to be announced on January 17, the Oscar nominations will now be revealed on January 19, with the voting period extended by two days, closing on January 14. This marks the first time in its history that the nominations will be announced on a Sunday.
AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer shared the news in an email addressed to Academy members, expressing condolences to those affected by the fires. "We want to offer our deepest condolences to those who have been impacted by the devastating fires across Southern California. So many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you," the email read.
In addition to the change in the voting and nominations schedule, the Academy has also postponed its International Feature Film Shortlist Screening, which was initially slated for Wednesday, January 8. New dates for the screening will be announced later this week.
"Bake-off" events meant to happen on Saturday, January 11 have also been canceled. These events, held to showcase shortlisted contenders in various categories like sound, hair and makeup, and visual effects, will now be replaced with virtual discussions where applicable.
The fires have caused widespread disruptions beyond the Academy's events. Late-night talk shows like "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and CBS' "After Midnight" have halted their productions, while other entertainment industry events such as the Critics Choice Awards, originally planned for January 12, and the Writers Guild of America's awards nomination announcement have been rescheduled.
The extreme weather and fire conditions have led to significant destruction across Los Angeles County. As of Wednesday, five people had lost their lives, and over 1,100 structures had been destroyed. The fires have not only plunged the local community into crisis but also put a pause on several high-profile industry events.
The 97th Academy Awards are currently scheduled to take place on March 2. As the community grapples with the far-reaching effects of the wildfires, the entertainment industry endeavors to adapt and push forward while offering support and solidarity to those in need.
