AceShowbiz - Anthony Hopkins, the renowned actor who has won two Academy Awards, has crossed a significant milestone in his sobriety journey. On Sunday, December 29, he celebrated 49 years of being sober and expressed his gratitude for his "unexpectedly long life" in a heartfelt video on Instagram.
Reflecting on his past struggles with alcohol, Hopkins recounted a moment of realization that led him to seek help. "I was having such fun, but then I realized I was in big, big trouble because I couldn't remember anything and I was driving a car, drunk out of my skull," he said.
After reaching out to a group of fellow alcoholics, Hopkins' life took a positive turn. "I've had more fun in these 49 years than ever," he declared.
Inspired by his own experience, Hopkins urged those dealing with addiction to seek assistance. "If you do have a problem - having fun is wonderful, having a drink is fine - but if you are having a problem with the booze, there is help," he emphasized. "It's not a terrible deal - it's a condition if you're allergic to alcohol. Get some help. There's plenty of help around."
Hopkins stressed that he is not alone in his recovery journey and that numerous resources are available to support individuals seeking sobriety. "One thing I didn't realize: I was not unique. There are thousands of people around like me," he said.
Hopkins, who turns 87 on December 31, expressed his appreciation for the fulfillment and opportunities he has enjoyed in his life. "I'm celebrating my long life - unexpectedly long life," he remarked.
He concluded his heartfelt message with a message of hope and encouragement for others facing similar challenges. "So if you have a problem, you know where to go. Phone any intergroup, 12-step program, whatever you could do. Because it is a killer," he said. "With that, Happy New Year!"
