AceShowbiz - Oscar-winning actress Anne Hathaway will star in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's chilling novel "Verity". Hathaway will play the titular role, a renowned author who is unable to complete her best-selling thriller series after suffering a mysterious accident.
Michael Showalter, who directed Hathaway in "The Idea of You", will helm the project for Amazon MGM Studios. The screenplay was written by Nick Antosca, with previous drafts by Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley & April Maguire.
In "Verity", Hathaway plays Verity Crawford, a gifted writer whose husband, Jeremy, hires struggling author Lowen Ashleigh to finish her unfinished books. As Lowen delves into Verity's work, she uncovers dark secrets and chilling manuscripts that raise questions about Verity's past and her sanity.
Producers for "Verity" include Eat the Cat's Antosca and Alex Hedlund, Semi-Formal Productions' Showalter and Jordana Mollick, Somewhere Pictures' Hathaway, Heartbones Entertainment's Hoover, and Shiny Penny Stacey Sher. Heartbones' Lauren Levine will serve as executive producer.
The film is based on Hoover's 2018 self-published novel, which spent months on the New York Times Best Sellers list and has sold over 1 million copies in 2023 alone. It is described as a "gothic, psychosexual thriller" in the vein of "Rebecca" and "Gone Girl".
Hathaway is known for her roles in films such as "The Devil Wears Prada", "Les Miserables" and "The Dark Knight Rises". Showalter's previous directing credits include "The Big Sick", "The Eyes of Tammy Faye" and "The Dropout".
The casting of Hathaway and Showalter follows the success of "The Idea of You", which starred Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine and became Amazon MGM Studios' most successful romantic-comedy debut.
"Verity" will be released in theaters, but a release date has not yet been announced.
