The couple began dating long-distance in January 2023, with Bertinelli living in Los Angeles and Goodnough on the East Coast. The two met a few years ago after Goodnough commented on one of Bertinelli's Instagram posts.

Bertinelli and Goodnough had a "three-week rule," under which they wouldn't go longer than that without seeing each other. However, in a July interview, Bertinelli said that it had been "challenging" to keep up with the rule during the summer months.

The couple made their red carpet debut at the Daytime Emmys in June 2023. Bertinelli had previously said that she wanted to keep her relationship more private going forward.

Bertinelli has been married twice before, to Eddie Van Halen and Tom Vitale. She has been open about her past relationships, including her 2021 split from Vitale.

Goodnough, a writer, described his initial disbelief and gratitude upon entering a relationship with Bertinelli in a Substack post. He wrote that he valued her thoughtfulness, kindness, and intelligence.
